CFUU Board Meeting Minutes

Meeting Held April 10, 2002 - 9 PM EST

Attendees: Dean Drake, Dean Fisher, Larry Landrum, Cecil Bohanon
Not available: Jim Rice

Minutes compiled by Dean Fisher. The meeting was held by conference call.
Action items are identified for each agenda item. Items marked with an asterisk (*) are items added after the meeting by the writer.

1. Review of open action items from previous board meeting:

Jim and Cecil - develop an ad for the UU World to draw new members, seek board approval for the ad and costs, place the ad.

Dean Drake - Membership renewal drive - create two letters, one for members that are paid up but coming due for dues, and one for those whose dues have lapsed for more than two years. This renewal drive may result in a trimming of our mailing list, we have 216 on the list, including 90 that have paid dues within the past two years.

Jim Rice - Submit Sigma article on Stem Cell Research

Dean Drake - Submit Bio for website

2. Status of events for General Assembly in Quebec (June 2002).

Larry Landrum will host the two CFUU sponsored events at GA, see the January 2002 board minutes for details. The meetings were scheduled with the GA planning committee as planned.

Dates and times for the events are:
"Building Communities…." Saturday, 8:15 PM
"Globalization…." Monday, 10:15 AM.

3. It was suggested that for GA 2003 the CFUU hire a "big name" speaker for an event. GA 2003 will be in Boston and the attendance is likely to be high by GA standards. A designated leader for this effort needs to be identified.

A CFUU Booth will likely be of value for the 2003 GA.

Action: Dean D. - Investigate Bill Schultz of Amnesty International as a speaker

Cecil - Investigate Peter Gomes as a speaker

Larry - Investigate Hernando DeSoto as a speaker

TBD - plan the 2003 GA event, select and hire speaker

4. CFUU Role and activities:

The suggestion was made that the CFUU should promote our own Study/Action Issues and Actions of Immediate Witness at the 2003 GA. Some brainstorming ideas were:
- An Anti Gun-control resolution highlighting the racist nature of how gun control is applied
- Change the way the UUA officers are elected to be by the UUA membership instead of by the GA attendees, ending the economic bias towards the wealthy in the UUA’s democratic process. *(Do I hear "soft money" in the way the wealthier UU’s can influence the campaigning?)
- Freedom of Information requirements for the Commission for Social Witness process and input.
- Freedom of Conscience resolution

5. The Quarterly board meeting schedule is:

Tuesday, July 2 (may need to move due to the holiday???)
Tuesday, October 1 (all at 9 PM Eastern, 8 Central)
Other meetings can be conducted on an as needed basis, and by e-mail.

The meeting concluded at 9:40 PM Eastern time.

Much thanks to the CFUU board for a productive and enjoyable meeting.
